Famiglia Cotarella
The family’s legacy began in 1920 with Antonio and Domenico Cotarella as grape growers in Monterubiaglio, Umbria. In 1979, brothers Renzo and Riccardo Cotarella (Domenico’s sons) founded Falesco winery with a mission to resurrect extinct micro-varieties and elevate Umbria’s winemaking status. In 2017, management passed to the third generation “Cotarella sisters” (Dominga, Marta, and Enrica), and the estate rebranded to Famiglia Cotarella. Renzo Cotarella served as wine director at Castello della Sala (Antinori) before becoming director of all Antinori activities globally, while Riccardo is one of Italy’s most important wine consultants and president of the Italian oenologists association. The Montiano wine has been acclaimed as one of Italy’s greatest reds since its 1993 vintage.
Estates: 370+ hectares including flagship 320-acre estate in Montecchio, Umbria at 1,500 feet elevation; Marciliano estate (260 ha); and Le Macioche in Brunello di Montalcino (7 acres acquired 2017). Volcanic soils around Lake Bolsena in the historical Etruscan heartland. Varieties include indigenous Roscetto and Aleatico plus Merlot, Cabernet, and Sangiovese. Approximately 3 million bottles annually. Equalitas certified for sustainability. Head of Production Pier Paolo Chiasso named Winemaker of the Year 2025.
