Tűzkő Birtok
Founded in 1799 (late 18th century). Originally owned by the noble Counts of Apponyi family (originally of French descent) for many years. Property taken under state control during communist period, became a cooperative. In 2000, Marchese Piero Antinori and Marchese Jacopo Mazzei took over management, attracted by the estate’s potential for fine wines. One of the oldest wineries in Hungary. Name meaning: “Tűzkő” means “flint stone,” referencing mineral deposits found in the region.
Estates: 250 hectares total estate, 170 hectares under vine (recently 169 ha). Altitude of approximately 200 meters above sea level; soils include loess hillsides. Gently rolling hills of Tolna wine region. Creating layered, versatile, subtle wines with special attention to indigenous varieties and international grapes. Varieties: WHITE – Pinot Grigio (Szürkebarát), Grüner Veltliner, Traminer, Rhine Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cserszegi Fűszeres, Hárslevelű, Green Silvaner; RED – Kékfrankos (56 ha), Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Bíborkadarka. Flagship Wine: Tűzkő Domb (made from best vineyard parcels in exceptional vintages only). Production: Approximately 500,000-600,000 bottles annually. Modern fermentation cellar (1991); historic barrel cellar from early 1700s excavated in loess hillside.
