Saraja
A recently established contemporary winery in Gallura, northern Sardinia. Collaboration between five experienced wine professionals led by Mark Hartmann (front-man/owner), working with renowned Italian consultant and winemaker Federico Curtaz. Despite the team having roots in northern Italy (Valle d’Aosta), they share a belief in Sardinia’s potential. “Saraja” means “furrow” in Sardinian dialect, representing the permanent mark the winery aims to leave on the territory. Rapidly gaining reputation as one of Sardinia’s most exciting new producers, with Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso recognition (2023).
Estates: 49 hectares of owned vineyards between Telti, Monti, and Calangianus in Gallura, with additional sites in Romangia (northwest) and Ogliastra (east). Vineyards at 400-500 meters elevation on Mount Limbara’s slopes. Difficult soils rich in stones and granite; combination of sand, loam, clay, and quartz; influenced by wind from the sea. Integrated agriculture (essentially organic without certification); no herbicides or insecticides; maximum 4 treatments per year; compost fertilization. Primary varieties: Vermentino (Gallura is its heartland), Cannonau, and Carignano. State-of-the-art modern winery overlooking the sea; hand harvesting; temperature-controlled fermentation; extended lees aging.
