Arnaldo Caprai
Founded in 1971 when textile entrepreneur Arnaldo Caprai purchased 12.5 acres in Montefalco. In 1988, ownership passed to his son Marco Caprai, who began a revolutionary project cultivating Sagrantino, a grape growing in Montefalco for 400+ years. Marco Caprai transformed Sagrantino from an obscure, rough grape for sweet passito wines into world-class dry wines, creating the appellation virtually “ex nihilo.” The legendary Montefalco Sagrantino Riserva 25 Anni, first made in 1993 for the 25th anniversary, greatly increased the company’s profile. In 2012, Arnaldo Caprai was awarded European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.
Estates: 150+ hectares (337 acres) of estate-owned land across Montefalco, Bevagna, and Gualdo Cattaneo in Val Di Maggio. Vineyards dedicated to Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Canaiolo, Grechetto, and Trebbiano Spoletino. At the forefront of research and innovation, working with University of Milan on the Sagrantino Project. The 25 Anniversario and Collepiano cuvée aged minimum 30 months before release. Helped grow the zone from scattered vines to over 2,500 acres of vineyards.
